Understanding the 4 C's of Diamonds

The 4Cs are referred to as the four characteristics that determine the value of a diamond, and they are (in English) Clarity, Cut, Color and Carat. Hence the 4Cs that are so often talked about to explain to the general public the characteristics of a particular diamond.

Purity

Called Clarity in English, it indicates the purity or presence of imperfections or inclusions in the stone and the way in which they are perceived in it. From grade I1 2 or 3 where the inclusions are clearly visible to the naked eye, to the best IF grade where the inclusions are not visible with a 10x magnifying glass.

Cut

It is called Cut in English or also cut, and it tells us about the geometric shape in which the rough stone has been cut. The best known and most common in jewelry is the round or brilliant cut, although cuts such as the princess, marquise or oval cut are increasingly used. The quality or perfection of the cut to achieve this geometric shape will drastically influence the stone's brilliance.

Color

Color is one of the most visible characteristics and will significantly influence the value of the stone. The scale established by the GIA establishes the different degrees of color from D to Z, from the most transparent to the yellowest color or the worst measurement.

Weight

Expressed as Carat in English, it refers to the unit of measurement in the weight of precious stones, it is the carat, and is equivalent to 0.20gr. In this way, at a professional level, diamonds are valued by carat based on all the characteristics we have discussed above.
